Germany’s opposition to Türkiye’s application for EU recognition of döner kebab has been met with a strong response from Bereket Döner. The company has unveiled an academic study that highlights döner’s historical and cultural significance as a Turkish tradition.
Speaking at a press event in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner presented findings to counter Germany’s objections and strengthen Türkiye’s case for the European Commission.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, draws on Ottoman-era artefacts and documentation, portraying döner as a culinary staple with cultural significance that transcends borders.
A Culinary Tradition of Connection
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir commented. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner further announced its plans to expand its Döner Point franchise throughout Europe, beginning in Germany, to introduce authentic Turkish döner to new audiences.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Bereket Döner’s actions aim to protect Turkish döner’s legacy while promoting its cultural value internationally.
